Aims and Scope

Biology Open is an online-only Open Access journal that publishes original research across all aspects of biological science, including cell science, developmental biology and experimental biology. Biology Open aims to provide rapid peer-reviewed publication for good-quality scientifically sound observations in these allied fields.

Biology Open extends the service delivered by our flagship journals, Development, Disease Models & Mechanisms, Journal of Cell Science and The Journal of Experimental Biology, by providing the research community with an opportunity to publish valid and well-conducted experimental work that is otherwise robbed of timeliness and impact by the delays inherent in submission to established journals with more restrictive selection criteria.

The Company of Biologists saw a problem for some authors finding homes for papers that were sound but lacked perceived impact. By focusing on the timely publication of good-quality, sound research without a requirement for perceived impact, Biology Open will facilitate dialogue and build a valuable body of work that supports the efforts of the research community, while reducing reviewer fatigue. The impact of each paper will be decided by the community itself through usage and discussion. The journal also encourages the submission of useful reports of negative results.

In a recent survey of authors, we found:

  • 64% of authors are concerned about the speed of peer review and publication
  • 56% of authors feel publication delays harm their paper’s impact
  • 61% of cell science authors face significant challenges finding a home for their papers!

Submissions

Submit direct or benefit from our manuscript rapid-transfer system from Development, Disease Models & Mechanisms, Journal of Cell Science, or The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Authors are encouraged to submit work of appropriate scope and focus directly to Biology Open, in which case peer review will be undertaken and managed by an international board of academic editors within each discipline.

Biology Open requires authors to submit new articles as PDFs to the journal, email bio.submissions@biologists.com. Authors should read the journal's publishing ethics and author guidelines before preparing their manuscripts.

For authors who have made their original submission to Development, Disease Models & Mechanisms, Journal of Cell Science, or The Journal of Experimental Biology, there is a simple manuscript transfer option should their paper not be accepted. Under this service, referees’ reports from the original peer review can be passed to Biology Open for a more rapid publication decision.

For manuscripts that have been transferred from other Company journals with reviews the Editor may make a decision without further review, but may also request additional review or take further advice through discussion with other members of the Editorial Board. For manuscripts that have been transferred from other Company of Biologists journals without reviews, or which have been directly submitted to Biology Open, the Editor may review the manuscript themselves, or, more usually, they will solicit additional review. All reviewers are requested to complete their reviews within seven working days. For manuscripts sent for peer review, we aim to notify authors of the Editor’s decision within ten working days of submission.

AVERAGE DECISION TIME: 10 DAYS (AUGUST 2011)

Open Access fees

To provide open access, the costs of publication in Biology Open are covered in part by charging a fee to the authors or the research supporters for each accepted article. This fee is $1350 and covers peer review, journal production, and online systems employed for the purposes of submitting, trafficking, hosting and archiving articles.

The Company of Biologists offers a complete or partial fee waiver for authors who do not have funds to cover open-access publication fees. Editors and reviewers do not have access to information regarding authors' financial contributions. The decision to publish a paper in Biology Open is wholly independent of payment or ability to pay, and is based solely on the validity and supportability of the work detailed in each manuscript.
